the birthplace of western civilization. Since the 1st century A.D. Rome has
been the seat of the Papacy and after the end of Byzantine domination, in
the 8th century it became the capital of the Papal States, which lasted
until 1870. In 1871 Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, and in
1946 that of the Italian Republic.

the Tiber River. The monuments of Rome are surrounded by virtual circle of
about 5km. its historic city centre is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage

Fontana di
Trevi
The baroque fountain was
completed in 1762 by Nicola Salvi. A previous undertaking to build the
fountain after a design by Bernini was halted a century earlier after the
death of Pope Urban Vlll. Salvi based his theatrical masterpiece on
this design. |

The central
figure of the
fountain in
front of a large
niche is
Neptune, god of
the sea. He is
riding a chariot
in the shape of
a shell, pulled
by two sea
horses. Each sea
horse is guided
by a triton. One
of the horse is
calm and
obedient, the
other one
restive. They
symbolize the
fluctuating
moods of the
sea.
The
legend has it
you will return
to Rome if you
throw a coin
into the water. |
You should toss it over
your shoulder with your back to the fountain.

Pantheon is a Roman Temple dedicated to all the gods of pagan Rome. As the
brick stamps on the side of the building reveal it was built and dedicated
between A.D.118 and 125. The emperor Hadrian (A.D. 117-138) built the
Pantheon to replace Augustus's friend and commander Marcus Agrippa's
Pantheon of 27 B.C. which burnt to the ground in 80 A.D. When
approaching the front of the Pantheon one can see the inscription above
still reads in Latin the original dedication by Marcus Agrippa. The Pantheon
exists today in such amazing form because the Byzantine emperor Phocas gave
it to Pope Boniface Vlll in A.D. 608 and it was used as a church ever since.
The Pantheon has been in use since the time it was built.
Probably one of the most fascinating features of the Pantheon is the
Architecture. |
 |
The dome itselfs is
supported by a series of arches that run
horizontally round. Romans had perfected the use
of arches which helped sustain the weight of
their magnanimous buildings.
The Italian kings Vittorio Emanuele ll and
Umbertol as well as the famous Renaissance
painter Raphael and his fiancee are buried in
the Pantheon. |
