There are about 400 churches in Rome.

First we introduce the
four major basilicas churches .
The title given to the four highest-ranking Roman catolic churches,all of which are also Papal Basilicas
the Archbasilica of St.John in the Lateran, St. Peter's Basilica, the Basilica of St.Paul outside the walls, and St. Mary  Major. All of them are located withn the diocese of Rome. St.Peter's Basilica is located in Vatican city and thus with the territory and sovereign jurisdiction of the Holy See, while the other three are located in Italian territory.

The Basilica of St. Peter was founded by costantine,  takes its present form since Renaissance and Baroque. Its main altar is the place where, as a result of excavations carried out in the 20th century, was found the tomb of
St Peter.
Among the architects who built the church in its present form there are Raffaello,  Michelangelo, Bramante.

Excavations around 1940 brought to light various tombs from the 2 nd century B.C., originally situated at the northern end of Nero's Circus.  They were richly decorated and frescoed pagan tombs, later flanked by christian tombs, which were some times very poor. At the end of the necropolis is an include  (Trofeo di Gaio), which both legend and recent studies indicate as the Apostle Peter's tomb.
In this place are placed tombs of Popes Paolo Vl and and Giovanni Paolo ll.

The basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is the mst important of the Romen churches dedicated to the virgin Maria. It was built on a previous church, built with funding from a rich his name is Giovanni. He dedicated a church to the Virgin Maria for her dream "Miracle of the Snow" between the night of 4th and 5th August 352 a.d.

The basilica of St.John Lateran was founded by Costantine as the main church of Rome. It was converted to the Baroque style by Francesco Borromini. Until 1309 next to the Basilica was the residence of the Popes and until 19th century the popes were crowned in the Lateran.

Sacala Santa

Tradition has it that the 28 steps of the Scala Santa are exactly the same as Jesus went up into the Pontius Pilate palace in Jerusalem. Brought to Rome by St. Helena in 4th century. They are considered so sacred that the faithful go up to his knees in prayer.
